Great family day out - plenty to see and loads of room to run about. Interesting museum , but also a good place to explore with tunnels and ramparts. Museum is free and parking only 3 for the day. Cafe is reasonably priced for drinks and snacks. Contains some fascinating objects if you are into military history, or just like guns. Family friendly, but plenty for the history buff. Events such as cannon firing are regular, but check the website.
Highlights of my trip to the UK in August 2017 were visiting Fort Nelson and Winchester Cathedral. Fort Nelson with its secret underground tunnels and ammunition bunkers that run below the fort connecting the magazines with gun emplacements was amazing. Just as amazing is the impressive Royal Armouries collection of artillery on display at Fort Nelson. This includes large and small guns from across the centuries, including some of the biggest guns ever made like Saddam Husseins Iraqi Supergun, which is so large that only a small section of it angled across two floors is on display. The facilities are great and there's a cafe and shop in the fort's Visitor Centre. The staff is super friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Admission to both the Fort and the Royal Armouries Museum is free and a visit is highly recommended.
Fascinating and very good value visit. The fort itself has a lot of interesting history and is worth a visit on its own. The artillery collection is also interesting, guns from the earliest bombards right up to modern towed howitzers. I do feel though that the artillery collection could be better presented, the main galleries are well set up and the signage is good in them, but there are a number of rather sad looking pieces dotted around the parade ground that are totally unheralded and look in serious need of some TLC. The firing of the WW2 howitzer was a highlight, my kids loved it!
Better than we expected from the website. On a clear day, the views would be spectacular over Pompey and the Isle of Wight. The tunnels were good to explore and the numerous cannons on display through lots of rooms were interesting. Food in the cafe was reasonably priced and good quality.
The Royal Armouries is a wonderful and historic day out - being a free attraction I wasn't sure what to expect. But it's a fantastic place for a morning or afternoon out. Lots to learn about, a great showcase of military guns from over the decades. The underground tunnels are also very fun to explore! It's family friendly and mostly accessable to all. Great shop, cafe and large car park attached. (Parking is paid, but cheap) the weather was great on our trip and was a great place to take a picnic. There was also a short gun demonstration which is always fun! The views across Portsmouth and the surrounding countryside from the fort is beautiful. So for a free thing to do for a couple of hours, this place gets a big thumbs up from me!
